Sports Governance was founded by Ilona Meyer LLM. LLB. GradDipLegPrac GIA(Cert) GAICD. AMIIA.

 

Ilona is a current practising lawyer and governance expert. She has identified a growing need to assist sporting organisations with their governance requirements and has combined her skills and experiences to create and establish Sports Governance.

Ilona is uniquely placed to assist sporting organisations meet their governance and dispute resolution needs. She has spent over 25 years working as a corporate lawyer and a number of years involved with publicly listed and private company boards as well as State and National Sporting Organisations. 

​

Ilona holds a Master of Laws, a Bachelor of Laws and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is an Independent Member of the Nominations Panel of the International Paralympic Committee and Chair and Non-Executive Director of Hoxton Industries Limited. She has also served as Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Governance Committee of Disability Sports Australia and was former Chair of Karting (New South Wales) Inc.

Ilona was a Finalist in the Lawyers Weekly - Australian General Counsel of the Year - Women in Law Awards in 2017 and led the legal teams which were Finalists as In-House Legal Teams of the Year in 2015,  2017 and 2022 respectively. Ilona was also recognised as one of Australasian Lawyer's Elite Women of 2021 and named on the Legal 500 GC Powerlist: Australia 2023.

 

She was instrumental in seeking the recovery of trust monies for a State Sporting Organisation in the NSW Supreme Court in 2021 and subsequent NSW Court of Appeal in 2022.

Ilona is a passionate advocate for transparency, accountability and the social responsibility of sporting organisations. She is also equally passionate in promoting diversity in sport.
